Summer Teaching Positions: Chinese and Korean Teachers and Teaching Assistants
Texas A&M University will be offering summer programs for incoming 2nd and 3rd graders to learn Chinese & Korean cultures and languages through
Fun crafts;
Traditional performing art;
Hands-on science projects with state-of-the-art Lego STEM kits;
Innovative use of technology.
(Each child will have an iPad to use during the summer program.)
This program is funded by a federal grant from the National Security Agency. The mission of this grant is to increase the number of U.S. citizens learning critical need foreign languages. We are seeking Chinese and Korean speakers as well as those who do not speak the languages natively but are interested in Chinese and Korean cultures in the community to join this fantastic program and introduce East Asian languages and cultures to elementary school children in the community!

JOB SUMMARY
Teachers
Develop lesson plans and deliver lessons;
Personalize instructional methods for the diverse students in the classroom and ensure student mastery of language skills;
Use educational technology to support instruction, develop and deliver content and skill benchmarks, organize instructional materials, and track student progress;
Establish a strong classroom culture for learning that is positive, inclusive, restorative, and contributes to the broader school community;
Build meaningful relationships and communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and other school stakeholders;
Maintain a high-level professionalism including meeting deadlines and commitments to self and the community.
Teaching assistants
Assist in instructional activities and supervise students in the classroom;
Assist in preparing instructional materials;
Coordinate cultural activities;
Teach craft or science lessons 1-2 times/ week (detailed lesson plans will be provided).
Qualifications for the Teachers
Required
Native or native-like proficiency in Chinese or Korean
Strong oral communication skills in English
Prior experience working with young children
Superb interpersonal skills; ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of students, colleagues and families;
Flexibility and adaptability to change; ability to work in a dynamic, creative and start-up learning environment
A high-level professionalism including meeting deadlines and commitments to self and the community
Preferred
Experience in K-5 public schools
Experience in teaching a second/foreign language
Bachelor's or graduate degree in education or related fields
Experience with Google apps and other educational technology
Experience with one or more of the following a plus: STARTALK-endorsed language teaching and learning principles (https://startalk.umd.edu/principles/); project-based learning; STEM education
Qualifications for the Teaching Assistants (paid)
Intermediate, advanced or superior proficiency in Chinese or Korean
Strong oral communication skills in English
Strong interpersonal skills
Interest in working with young children
Qualifications for the Teaching Assistants (volunteers)
Strong interpersonal skills and oral communication skills in English
Interest in working with young children
Location
Spring Creek Elementary School
Class Meeting Dates and Time
5/30 to 6/23, M-F, 7:35 am to 12:30 pm
Teachers and paid TAs are required to participate in a week-long professional development training at Texas A&M University during the week of 5/22;
Volunteer teaching assistants may participate in the program for 1, 2 or 4 weeks. Preferences will be given to those who can participate in the entire month of the program.
Rate:
Teacher:
$20 - 25/hour, commensurate with experience
Teaching assistant:
$10/hour or;
community service hours
