On Thursday, March 23, 4:00 PM in the Glasscock Building, Room 311, Texas A&M Ph.D. (2008) and current TAMU Visiting Scholar Kiyoon Jang will deliver a lecture entitled “The Legitimacy of the ‘House Divided’ in Elizabeth Stoddard’s The Morgesons.” Dr. Jang is Associate Professor of English at Sogang University in Seoul, Korea. Her research is focused on early and 19th century American literature, writers such Elizabeth Stoddard and Louisa May Alcott, as well as more canonical works by Nathaniel Hawthorne and Henry James. Her presentation in March will be drawn from her current work-in-progress on novelist Elizabeth Stoddard's The Morgesons (1862) in light of its relevance within the Civil War era. Rejecting the critical consensus on the novel's lack of definitive historicity, Jang's project proposes reading The Morgesons as a family saga full of secession and allegiance among the members, and explores the ways Stoddard responds to contemporary national concern with the "House Divided" in favor of disunion.
Dr. Jang’s talk is sponsored by the Department of English, the English Graduate Program, and the English Graduate Student Association.
